(therefore I do not know what to expect, what the settings mean, whether 24 hour format possible, ...)
2. the first thing I tried is setting the target time to 0:0:0 - this crashed the widget
(idea was to simply use the timer as a clock)

I'll look into this and see if I can find anything which might be causing unnecessary CPU usage but as I'm sure you'll appreciate it is extremely difficult to track down bugs which you can't reproduce. A timer is still firing 20 times per second when the animation is switched off but there is no graphic update unless the time has changed, and a timer on its own uses virtually no system resources.

I'm not seeing this on my PC. When I turn animation off, it drops to between 1 and 2% and when I turn seconds off it drops to 0% and spikes to 1 or 2% every 60 seconds. That's on a Pentium Mobile 1.6GHz laptop - nothing special.
I don't know why you'd be seeing such high figures unless you're on a Mac. Is anyone else seeing anything like this?
