Bill it!

by Charlie Chambers

Bill It! provides a lightweight way to keep track of hours to be billed to various projects. It reminds you at regular intervals to enter information about what you are working on, and then creates reports from that data.

I suspect the problem is really that the developer always had the text files during testing and never tested as a new user. Anyway I got it to work by doing the following steps:
    1. Created a c:BillIt folder
    2. Created a file in the BillIt folder named Billit_records.txt
    3. Opened Widget Preferences, entered the C:BillIt path name
    4. Entered a list of job names as: Coding,Debugging,Documentation,Coffee
    5. Save the preferences
    6. Click the widget and start billing any code
    7. Wait at least a minute, then start another billing code
    8. Right click the widget and click Make Summary File
You should now have a valid report.

    Hi Charli!

This is a great Tool which I will happily use even though I might import the BillIt_records.txt into excel finally to do the pivot dance... over a whole month...

BUT then there's the space in filename issue:

THE FOLLOWING CHANGE WILL OVERCOME PROBLEMS
    WITH SPACES IN PATHNAMES:

As Namo described earlier on Sept. 7th the syntax in line 66 of the javascript onLoad.js code is bound for trouble when using filenames containing spaces.

The echo command to append the lines must be build to embrace the filename with simple quotes, especially calling the unix tools on a windows pc packaged with konfabulator:

Line 66 of the code must read

    var cmd = "echo '"+line+"' >> '"+(resolvePath(preferences.filePath.value+"/" + RECORDS_FILE))+"'";

    Best Regards - <b>-X-</b>

    E:\My Documents\My Widgets\Bill It! Folder\" in shortname format that is "e:\mydocu~1\mywidg~1\BillIt~1\"

I am trying again, they stripped my backslashes

The problem with the summary file is the spaces. It can be easily overcome by putting the file location in the widget preferences in the shortname format. For example I store the file on "E:My DocumentsMy WidgetsBill It! Folder" in shortname format that is "e:mydocu~1mywidg~1BillIt~1" without the quotes
