Info URL

by William Warby

Displays a simple piece of information from a specified URL at a specified interval. The idea is that you create a web page yourself which feeds this Widget with information, and when the URL is called, whatever the URL returns is displayed in a slide-out information bar.

You could use this for displaying how many hits you've had on your website, the status of a server, the number of records in a database, notification of new posts on a forum, or pretty much anything, really, since you create the URL it reads using a server-side scripting language (PHP, Perl, ASP etc.). You can set the information bar to become a link to another URL which you specify, and you can change the size, colors and length of time the information bar is displayed. Since the information bar will only slide out if the URL doesn't return an empty string, you can use it to notify you only when a particular piece of information changes. Full instructions are included in the built-in help page. Less

    Great little widget, thanks!

I'm modifying it to create a button for pinging a webserver to toggle myself in or out for our staff in-out board.

Problem is, I don't want it to automatically ping the webserver at certain intervals. Is there a way around this? A line I could delete from the JavaScript?

Another question: is there a way for the widget to watch for user activity, and if the screensaver comes on, or there is no typing/mouse movement, then it will ping the web server accordingly? Likewise, when activity resumes, another ping? (If you want to program this for me, I would pay you for it.)

    Thanks!

Ive been using this for some time now, its great.

But i had to stop using it cause it was consistantly using upwards of 60 mb.

I think it has a memory leak.

This a very useful widget. I use it to monitor how many people are currently on my site, like Tanet.

Great job on this and all your other widgets!
