Jenerator

by David C. Zentgraf

Are you learning Japanese? Then this Widget is for you. The Jenerator displays one entry at a time from the EDICT dictionary, helping you to memorise all these Kanji step by step.

Included is a small selection of Jim Breen's EDICT file, suitable for beginners. You can use your own dictionary file as well, should work fine with Chinese, Korean or almost any other language. Instructions are included in the widget.

[Windows users: You'll need to have support for east-Asian languages installed. (Control Panel : Regional and Language Options : Languages)]

You can always go back to the preferences using the small gear menu icon in the upper right (Mac OS) or lower right (Windows) corner. The widget doesn't quit (at least it shouldn't), and should still run in the background, so you can still access the prefs through the gear menu.
That's a bit non-obvious I have to admit, look for a change here in a next release.

You can also always rename the widget to Jenerator2.widget or something, so the old preferences for Jenerator.widget won't be loaded.

I accidentally set the custom dictionary to point to a non-dictionary directory, and now it won't let me go back and fix it! I try to restart the widget, and it just says "Unlucky in trying to find a valid dictionary entry in the specified files" and quits. There needs to be a way to go back to the default dictionary when that happens. I want to be able to use your great widget!

Thanks for the great work. This works well with the edict format JLPT vocab lists found at http://www.thbz.org/kanjimots/jlpt (UTF Format *-extra.utf files).

Edmund: Try selecting another font, something like MS PMincho. If you're still having issues, it might be best to send me an email directly (check the widget's about box...).

If you download the full EDICT from Jim Breen's page how is it configured? I extract it tot a folder and set in Jenerator where the edict file is, but there's a formatting issue. Even after I change the extension to .txt. I get odd characters like, tilde "N" and the omega symbol. Sometimes no text shows up at all.
