Mail Candy

by Curtis Clifton

Small, discreet, and oh so sweet!

This is a simple in-box monitoring Widget that works with Mac OS X Mail. The candy shows gray when there are no unread messages. The candy changes color (and optionally pulsates) when new messages arrive.

To move the Widget, hold down the command key while dragging.

Click the Mail icon inside the Widget to bring the Mail application to the front. Move the mouse over the candy to see a tool-tip showing the number of unread messages. Use the preferences More

This is a great widget that is indespensible for me. However, it uses between 10 and 20% of my CPU running on a G4 466mhz tower OS 10.3.7. That's quite a lot of cpu I think.

Thanks for the bug report, Courtade. I'll look into that problem, but I'm afraid it will be a few weeks. It's a crazy time of year.

I just now discovered that when Mail is running but an email is saved in the Drafts Folder, Mail Candy displays a "color" & text which says "mail is not runnng". When I delete the save email from Drafts, the widget now displays correctly.

very nice widget curt. I like the simplicity.
I think it'd be cool to add a "transparent" color option, such that the widget was transparent (perhaps with a small mail icon still in the middle) when there was no unchecked mail. . . or when the mail program was off or something. (this as opposed to the opacity option which affects the widget all the time).
    Thanks for the cool candy.

I exchanged emails with Charles and it appears that there was just a misunderstanding about how Mail Candy works. Mail Candy requires that the Mac OS Mail application is running in order to display data. There are other mail checking widgets that check directly with your mail server, but this one is for those of us who keep Mail running.
