MailMan

by Bryan Warman

This is an unobtrusive POP mail checking Widget that is invisible until you have email. When new mail arrives, it will then appear and indicate how many pieces of mail you have waiting.

Future versions will support other protocols.

Any chance it can be made to launch Entourage instead of Apple's Mail?

Check your server settings and make sure they are correct and if that doesn't work delete your preferences and start over. Seems like an odd problem that I've never seen before. Wish I could be more helpful. It only works with POP3 protocol so if your server is IMAP it won't work at the moment. I plan on upgrading it to support IMAP at a later date.
