A little confused as to the precise criteria used to obtain the google rank displayed. Perhaps someone could explain?

Google's terms of use says:

No Automated Querying

You may not send automated queries of any sort to Google's system without express permission in advance from Google. Note that "sending automated queries" includes, among other things:

I'm not sure exactly what you are refering too, but this widget does not keep any sort of data from your web viewing. It does nothing but check for the rank data on each of the websites you put in. And it doesnt store that data on any external source, just your registry.
