Ultimate WOTD

by William

This Widget grabs the Word of the Day from multiple sources, and provides the pronunciation(s), definition(s), usage examples, etymology, and even audio pronunciations when available! It also provides a link back to the source's webpage. This is a great way to increase your vocabulary, especially if you are preparing for the SAT or PSAT!

Don't even bother with the other dictionary widgets; this is the only one you'll ever need. It is perfect in every way. Thank you William for fixing it!

Wow! I'm thrilled (and slightly horrified! - I'll explain later) at the responses that have been posted during my year-long absence. People pleading to have it fixed?! It's gotten five star ratings, despite the fact that it was completely broken?!!! Users even created a forum thread to discuss what to do, and came up with some awesome ideas for a new WOTD widget: (http://www2.konfabulator.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=19142) Unfortunately, it doesn't appear anyone stepped up to create another widget. This niche - a small one albeit, for logophiles (and I hadn't even heard of that word!) - is still unfilled. I felt bad to let so many people down, so this afternoon I sat down and updated the widget, so all the sources work again!

I had to get a Yahoo! account in order to upload the new widget, but hopefully it will pass inspection and be available soon. In the mean time, version 3.2 can be downloaded from here: http://stashbox.org/68945/Ultimate%20WOTD.widget

On the one hand, I'm thrilled to have created something that inspires such fervor. On the other hand, I seem to be stuck supporting a widget that I can't even run on my operating system of choice (Kubuntu Linux). If ANYONE would like to take the project over, PLEASE do.

Regardless, I'm proud to present Ultimate WOTD v3.2! I hope you enjoy it.

This is really a great widget. It's really unfortunate that it has been abandoned. Dictionary.com and Mirriam Webster are not working for me.

I decided to use the whole yahoo widget software instead of the windows vista sidebar just for this particular widget. I am hoping that these will somehow get fixed especially the doctionary.com

This sir, is an awesome widget. It's a logophile's wet dream and my favorite widget by far!!

I am so disappointed you won't be continuing it. Is there any chance you would reconsider? Please? PLEASE?!? As it stands, I'm sorry but I have to agree with some of the posters here that Dictionary.com is essential to any WOTD program. I'm sadly very ill-equipped to deal with technological conundrums but you write:

"However, all that needs to be done to fix it is change the regular expressions used to parse the Dictionary.com site. Anyone who has the inclination to fix it and knows a little about regular expressions could do it without too much trouble, I believe. I'll gladly update the widget is someone sends me the code changes, but otherwise, I'm afraid that this widget is abandonware. (At least for a while.)"

Can anyone send Mr. Hilton the code he needs, to parse the expressions, as he puts it? Is the work that tedious? If it is,
