Ico is exactly correct, there is no such "study" or any peer reviewed work anywhere that provides evidence for the 8 glasses of water thing. Many medical professionals themselves repeat the "wives tale" but it is just that, at tale, with no supporting evidence.

Of course "dehydration == bad thing" but that is not in any way related to "8 water day" - you can drink beer and kool aid and absinthe and be perfectly hydrated (ok, maybe not absinthe ;)) - tha…ts a different matter than to equate 8 glasses of water a day with being "good for you" without any evidence of such. Actually, drinking water is a good thing for your body. My ob/gyn told me to get between 9 and 12 8oz glasses of fluids, preferably water and definitely not alcoholic, per day. At the very least, studies have shown that besides eating too little, not getting enough fluids can also trigger the body's "hoarding" mode (wherein your body thinks it needs to save anything) which makes it harder to keep a healthy weight. Plus there's that whole dehydration == bad thing.

The doctor that was doing the research, had dictated "Drink lots of water" to his secretary. Since she always drank 8 glasses a day, and was seldom ill, she changed his document to say 8 glasses. That's the version of the story I've heard anyway.
