Maybe you can tell me what to change in your regExp.
(I prefer using widgetgallery.com, but from what I can tell from the forums, it might not stay forever)

Like kwilliam, I edited it to return a value rather than popup.

I've updated this class and used it in my eduCam! and Doppler Weather widgets (IndianaDoppler!, TexasDoppler!, KansasDoppler!, etc.) so that it now checks the Yahoo Widget Gallery instead of the Konfabulator widget and also includes the suggestions of Roert and kwilliam below.

This is a wonderful addition to the library. I've implemented it in Weather Warning, and as I get around to it, hopefully my other ones as well.

I added a passive/active flag to one of your constructors so that I can determine whether I want to generate a popup (for example, I don't want a popup every time at launch, but I do in the context menu). If you want the code for this let me know, or you can just to add it to your codebase for future use on your own. It's not too hard. :-)

Mike, this is great! I'd change the text some, from "Error: ouch, there was a problem..." to "VersionChecker: There was a problem..." just so the origin of the error is more clear. :-)
2ndly, it would be nice if you could add a more discrete form of the .checkVersion function for times when you want to check for updates without the alert() popups. I wrote one (.checkForUpdates) by replacing the 'alert(...);' lines with 'return [value];' to make it a func…tion that returns true if updates are available.
