Things to consider: WI-FI is tricky. Before, I got that bigger antenna, I could only get a good signal at 2'. You may get a signal at 33' or not get a signal at 1'. It depends on how much electrical interferance you have in the room (TVs, even off, cordless telephones,etc). And the signal also fluctuates a lot. You may want to try and see if you can get a bigger antenna for your router (I know office max has one which I got.). Otherwise it may be your wi-fi adapter is no good.

DarkKnightVery helpful, but I wish there was one to just moniter connection strength thru a wired connection, such as total mbps, so you know how fast the internet is going with a wired cable connection, or dsl or whatever.
